Two Schaumburg bike events return next week

Schaumburg will again celebrate its bicycle-friendliness next week with the return of two annual biking traditions.

In recognition of Bike to Work Week, Mayor Al Larson will be leading a ride at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, from the Meineke Recreation Facility at 220 E. Weathersfield Way to his own workplace at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Court.

The ride begins on the bike path outside the Meineke Recreation Facility and proceeds to Beech Drive, east to Abrahamsen Park, through the park Summit and then north to the Schaumburg municipal grounds.

The public is also invited to the longer Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg, which begins at noon Sunday, May 17, from Blackwell Elementary School at 345 N. Walnut Lane.

The police-guided seven-mile tour uses both on- and off-street bike paths before also ending at the Atcher Municipal Center.

All participants must sign a liability waiver, and beginners and training-wheel users are advised not to join.

Immediately following the tour, a picnic-style lunch will be served and musical entertainment will be provided by a DJ who will participate in games with the children. A limited supply of T-shirts will be available at the end of the ride for $10 each.

For those not wishing to ride their bicycles all the way back to Blackwell School after the tour, the Schaumburg Park District will start returning riders and their bikes at 1:45 p.m.
