Manny, Floyd, could learn a thing or two

Dear Manny and Floyd,

With all due respect to your intense training, macho posturing, and scowling, I know someone tougher than both of you. In fact, I know many people tougher than both of you.

My sweet, kind daughter, Sarah Grace, wore tiny boxing gloves on a silver chain when she was battling cancer. She used the song "The Fighter" to motivate herself when days looked dark. Her battle lasted much longer than your own heavily-promoted, money-saturated fight - all that hoopla for less than an hour of boxing. In fact, Sarah Grace spent about 2½ years using all her physical and spiritual strength to fight against leukemia.

Sure, Manny and Floyd, you emerged with bruises, cuts, and scrapes. Honestly, you don't know the courage of cancer patients. How about spending all night in intense pain, which even morphine cannot control, knowing that when morning comes the cancer will still be coursing through your bone marrow?

How about so much chemo that your feet swell to twice their size, turn reddish purple, and peel - but you still have to get up and walk to prevent fluid build up in your lungs? How about chemical burns down your esophagus after a stem cell transplant, creating pain with every involuntary swallow?

Yes, Manny and Floyd, you are tough. I get it. You both have overcome many obstacles in your lives. Good for you. But I didn't watch your match. Instead, I wore Sarah's boxing gloves charm and remembered her courage and toughness.

I remembered all her fellow cancer patients, celebrating those who made it and thinking of those who have joined her in heaven.

You both could learn a thing or two from the real fighters ... fighters who are tougher than you will ever be.
