Dale Carnegie Leadership Camp for Teens Creates Leaders

Local student shares her life changing experience

(Downers Grove, IL) May 4, 2015-A year ago, Nancy Carrillo, 17, a Streamwood High School student, struggled with public speaking. It was hard for her to express herself in front of large crowds.

Carrillo would find the help that she needed after entering the "Princess for a Day" contest presented by the Fig Factor Foundation, a local nonprofit that helps young Latinas ages 15 to 25 to unleash their potential. She became the event's first queen and won a scholarship for the Dale Carnegie - Chicago Leadership Camp for Teens.

The camp, based in Downers Grove, a weeklong leadership-based summer program, teaches participants real world people skills as well as self-confidence, communication and attitude management among others. On day one, Carrillo learned a life lesson on attitude. "I learned that I am, just as everyone else, in charge of my attitude and I believe that this realization has also made me more mature," she says.

After graduating last year, Carrillo uses her skills as the foundation's teen ambassador and will be a coach for this year's camp. "The Dale Carnegie teen leadership camp has taught me that there are no limits to where you want to get in life," she says.

Jacqueline Camacho-Ruiz, Fig Factor Foundation founder and Nancy's mentor, is proud of her student's progress. "Nancy Carrillo is a wonderful young lady that is ready to help our community," she says. "I have been her mentor for over a year and I have seen her blossom as a leader and inspired so many other young Latinas. The Dale Carnegie Course really made an impact on her and now she can share that gift with other Latinas."

Holly Francis, Dale Carnegie - Chicago Program Facilitator, says the camp encourages participants to look inward and at others as well. "In this program, we focus on strengths - those that we see in ourselves as well as those that we see in others," Francis says. "This leadership skill builds participants' confidence as well as gets them focusing on others."
