THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX JOIN FORCES WITH THE JANICE McARDLE CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

(Naperville, Ill.) - The Chicago White Sox and the Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation are teaming up for the third annual Non-Smoking Lung Cancer Awareness Day on July 19 at U. S. Cellular Field.

"We want to get the word out about the non-smoking lung cancer," said Dr. George McArdle, who heads up the foundation. "It is a huge plague and represents significant numbers in the cancer community, but we can make a difference."

McArdle started The Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation, "Jannie's Hope," in honor of his wife, Jannie, a vibrant and active non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2008. Like many, Jannie and her family were shocked to learn she had advanced stage lung cancer, particularly because she didn't smoke.

"When Jannie was diagnosed with lung cancer it really broadsided us," said McArdle, of Naperville. "She was as healthy as can be; she worked out regularly, took care of herself and was not a smoker."

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

McArdle and the foundation hope to change that, and are passionate about funding research so things will be different for others diagnosed with non-smoking lung cancer.

Jannie was a big Sox fan, so pairing with the South Side team was a logical choice. Net proceeds of ticket sales will benefit lung cancer research programs supported by the foundation.

"This event is always a great time and I am happy to support it," said Bob Jung of Bob Jung Painting and Decorating, an event sponsor for the third consecutive year. "Each year more people attend, which means each year we are raising more funds and increasing awareness for non-smoking lung cancer."

Besides the game, attendees are invited to a pre-game tailgating party in Lot "A" adjacent to the ballpark. It is a family friendly event, so bring kids, friends and neighbors to celebrate Jannie McArdle and give hope to others. There will be complimentary food, beer, wine and soft drinks, plus fun games, great raffle prizes and a chance to meet and get an autograph from former White Sox slugger Ron Kittle.

Tickets are $22 and must be purchased through Jannie's Hope (www.jannieshope.org/wsgame) to benefit the Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation. If you have any questions or want help ordering tickets, contact Judy Phillip at 630-846-5158 or JPhillipinc@gmail.com
