Is this the year for new suburban casinos?

State Sen. Terry Link, a top gambling expansion supporter, said this year's near-annual attempt by lawmakers to add more games of chance in Illinois will include a casino in Lake County and slot machines for Arlington Park. The question of whether the whole thing happens has once again come up at the Capitol, where some lawmakers who have heard the cries of advocates for the disabled, nursing homes and numerous other causes might see the taxes generated by new gambling palaces as a budget savior, writes Political Editor Mike Riopell.

Gunshot reported during Naperville home invasion

A gunshot was fired during a home invasion last night in Naperville, but no injuries were reported, authorities said. Police responded to a multifamily residential development near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Royal St. George Drive after 7:30 p.m. Full story.

Kline Creek horses sale sparks worry over their fate

DuPage County horse enthusiasts are fearing the worst after two horses formerly owned by the DuPage County Forest Preserve District were sold at auction. "Kill buyers do attend horse auctions," said Jane Muklewicz of Naperville, who defined a kill buyer as someone who purchases horses to ship them to a slaughterhouse. District officials say they have no reason to believe anything bad happened to the horses, but they will be checking. Full story.

Rauner 'on a mission' to attract foreign businesses

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said he is "on a mission to listen and learn" from foreign business investors in order to attract them to Illinois. The governor, speaking to about 1,000 suburban business leaders yesterday at the annual DuPage County Regional Business Outlook breakfast in Oakbrook Terrace, outlined the results of a recent survey conducted by the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity on how other countries perceive Illinois as a place to invest in business. Des Plaines Mariano's closer to reality

A proposed Mariano's in Des Plaines is closer to reality after the city council unanimously approved two key financial incentives that developers say are crucial to a deal being finalized. The first incentive is a Cook County tax exemption that would lower property taxes for 12 years on the 10-acre site at the northeast corner of Golf and Mount Prospect roads. The other would rebate to Mariano's 50 percent of the sales taxes generated by the store, up to $875,000. Full story.

Teenager dies from injuries in Des Plaines crash

One person is dead and three others remained hospitalized yesterday after a crash near Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on Monday. Michael Polder, 18, of Chicago was a passenger in one of the two cars involved in the crash at the intersection of Golf Road and College Drive. Full story.

Aurora man dies in fire

A 73-year-old man is dead after fire broke out in a single-family home yesterday in Aurora. Authorities said there were no working smoke detectors in the house, but they don't yet know how the fire started. Full story.

99-year-old St. Charles man throws out first pitch at Cougars game

A World War II machine-gunner who served under Gen. George Patton and fought in the Battle of the Bulge got to throw out the first pitch yesterday at the Kane County Cougars game. Walter Guzy of St. Charles, who is celebrating his 99th birthday, was part of the Silver Foxes seniors group attending the game. He joked that he tossed a knuckleball. Full story.

Wild keep shooting, don't score; Hawks win 1-0

Less than a minute after Jared Spurgeon was whistled for tripping Bryan Bickell, Patrick Kane sniped a shot past Devan Dubnyk to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish during a Game 3 victory over the Wild last night. Corey Crawford turned away all 30 of the Wild's shots. The Hawks, now up 3-0, can close out the series Thursday, writes John Dietz.
