River Bandits shut down Cougars

The Quad Cities River Bandits' (20-9) pitching staff handed the Kane County Cougars (11-15) their first shutout of the season as they guaranteed a series victory with a 4-0 win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon.

Brent Jones (1-3) only allowed two runs in his fourth quality start of the season, but suffered the loss.

Quad Cities opened up the scoring with two runs in the fourth. Despite putting on at least one base runner every inning, Jones kept him team within two runs for six frames. The River Bandits doubled their advantage with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning against the Cougars' bullpen.

Daniel Mengden (2-1) worked six shutout innings, giving up five hits to the Cougars throughout the night. The River Bandits' right-hander walked no batters and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. Quad Cities' bullpen faced the minimum through the final three innings of the game.

The Cougars hope to avoid the sweep on Wednesday. Left-hander Jared Miller (2-1, 5.40) will finish off the series against the River Bandits' Joshua James (1-0, 1.69). First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 11 a.m.
