Rain doesn't slow Cinco De Mayo celebration in Waukegan

A rainy afternoon couldn't stop the Cinco de Mayo celebration Tuesday at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in downtown Waukegan.

The outdoor event was held in the CLC Lakeshore Campus courtyard and featured music by disc jockey David Olivares, a mariachi band from Andrew Cook Magnet School, mariachi dancers and Cinco de Mayo stories.

"It's always a great event even though the weather out here isn't the best. The celebration is just uplifting and very important to this community," said David Weatherspoon, director of the Student Services Center.

The college held the event so the community could learn more about programs and services available at the Lakeshore Campus, including course offerings for the summer session and fall semester.

Cinco de Mayo is significant because it recognizes the unexpected victory of the Mexican army over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
