Garage fire closes Camp McDonald Road in Prospect Hts. late Sunday

A garage fire in Prospect Heights closed Camp McDonald Road between Route 83 and Wheeling Road late Sunday night, but no one was injured, authorities said.

Chief Donald Gould of the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District said flames were visible when firefighters arrived in the 200 block of East Camp McDonald Road at 9:18 p.m.

He said firefighters tried to get into the garage - which was not attached to the house - to knock down the blaze, but the fire was complicated due to acetylene tanks and race fuel being stored inside.

"We did the best we could to knock it down, but we had to wait for any small explosions to happen before we could move in and put it out," Gould said.

He said the garage was destroyed in the blaze. The cost of damages and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

Camp McDonald Road reopened early Monday.
