Baseball: Northwest roundup

Hersey's baseball team used a late surge to pick up an 8-6 victory over Antioch on Saturday in nonconference play.

The Huskies scored 4 runs in the seventh inning, which included a 2-run error committed by Antioch and a double from Max Heeren.

Hersey (7-11-1) out-hit Antioch 13-4 as Will Trossen finished 4-for-4, Ryan Allain hit a solo homer and and Heeren went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and a triple.

Campbell White earned a win after throwing 4 relief innings, and Nick Zouras got the last three outs, 2 by strikeout.

St. Viator splits with Marist: The Lions claimed a 7-3 victory in the first game before Marist bounced back to win 10-2 in the second contest in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

Kevin Napoleon tossed a complete game and Cole Kmet and Aaron Tres both drove in 2 runs in the first game. Ben Dickey walked and stole 2 bases, and Napoloen struck out sixth with 1 walk.

In the second game, Mike Ragauskis and Matt Darling scored in the first inning on a double by Tres, but the Lions couldn't much else going against three Marist pitchers. Kmet doubled and finished with 3 hits for St. Viator (17-7, 7-4).

Maine West 15, Waukegan 5 (5 inn.): The Warriors scored 11 runs in the fifth inning on the way to a decisive Central Suburban League crossover victory.

Key moments in the frame for the Warriors (12-8) included a 2-run single by Crosley Duckmann, an RBI single by Joe Swanson, and RBI single from Alex Zimmerman and a 2-run single by Jake Riportella, a 2-run double by Eric Outlaw (and later a steal of home) and another RBI single from Swanson.

Swanson finished with 4 RBI and 3 hits, and Zimmerman earned a win in relief after tossing a scoreless 1⅓ innings.

Prospect 8, Lake Forest 5: Trey Compton doubled twice and drove in the go-ahead run with one of them in the fifth inning to help the Knights pick up a nonconference win.

Jake Cavaiani also doubled twice, and Patrick Donohue (2 RBI) and Lucas Karz also had 2 hits for the Knights (18-5). Grant Miller hit a solo homer, and one of Donohue's hits was a triple.

Four Prospect pitchers allowed a total of 10 hits, but Lake Forest stranded eight baserunners as the Knights won their third straight.

Fremd, Warren split: Tom Austin hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to help the Vikings salvage a split in nonconference play against the host Blue Devils with a 6-3 victory.

Fremd (11-11) fell 11-0 in the first game as Warren's Andrew Hill hit 2 homers, one of them a grand slam.

Libertyville 9, Elk Grove 6: The host Grens tied it up with a 5-run fourth inning, but Libertyville pulled away by scoring twice in both the fifth and seventh innings to earn a nonconference win.

Chuck Fleming, Sean Fege and Jack McEnroe each had 2 hits for Elk Grove (14-6), while Riley Lees tripled and walked twice for Libertyville.

Barrington 17, Harlem 5 (5 inn.): It was another powerful showing from the host Broncos as Casey Dodge, Anthony DeLaurentis and Jimmy Day homered in a nonconference victory.

Dodge and Luke Johnson finished with 3 hits apiece. Johnson drove in 3 runs and Jake Petersen, who doubled, drove in 2.

Chad Shechtman started and earned the win after striking out six and allowing 2 earned runs in 4 innings.

Mitch Pfeiffer went 2-for-3 with a steal and an RBI for the Broncos (18-6), who saw their win streak reach 11.

Stevenson 14, Buffalo Grove 4 (6 inn.): Robby McGaha homered and drove in 3 runs, and Willie Bourbon went 2-for-2 with a triple as the host Patriots (16-6-1) came up with 13 hits in nonconference play.

Trey Cervantes and John Carpinelli had doubles and the Bison (9-14) had 8 hits, and 7 of them against winning pitcher Michael Kingery.

Vernon Hills 7, Wheeling 6: The visiting Cougars scored twice in the seventh inning to score a come-from-behind nonconference winner.

Matt Vollmer went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Martin Falkiner and Brenden Spillane had doubles for the Wildcats (6-15), who could not overcome 6 errors.

Drew Winegardner doubled and had a solo home for Vernon Hills.
