Aurora church to host luau to celebrate moms

Hawaii is coming to an Aurora church. With a trio of female Hawaiian dancers and male waiters in tropical attire, an indoor luau will celebrate an early Mother's Day at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Fourth Street United Methodist Church, 551 S. Fourth St. in Aurora.

About 100 women from moms to great-grandmothers are expected for the annual dinner program.

The event is titled "Ka 2015 Makuahine Ame Kaikamahine Luau, Mei 5, 2015 (Mother and Daughter Banquet, May 5, 2015)."

Debuting its first luau theme, the decades-old celebration will open with a catered dinner served by 10 male church volunteers sporting Hawaiian shirts.

After dinner, a performance in the church sanctuary will feature "The Hula Ladies," a dance trio. In a 45-minute program, they will perform eight traditional favorites with song and dance. Also, the musicians will invite audience members to come forward to learn a "Little Brown Gal" dance and lead a sit-down hula.

Trio tunes scheduled are "Te Maramarama," a Tahitian dance; "Do the Hula," a Hawaiian dance; "Little Grass Shack," dancers will be accompanied by audience members on percussion instruments; "Naka Pueo"; "Kanaka Wai Wai," parable of the rich man; "Happy Talk," sit-down hula; "Little Brown Gal," audience invited to join dancers on stage; and "Tahiti Tahiti." Akauahines, senior moms, will be recognized with gifts.

Guests will be invited to loan vacation photos for a display. Giuliana Eggert of Aurora is event chairman.

Tickets are $7. Call (630) 897-5257.
