Schaumburg edges Elk Grove, stays perfect in MSL

Schaumburg and Elk Grove, which went into the game as the Mid-Suburban West and East softball leaders, played quite a dramatic crossover on Friday.

Elk Grove sophomore Kylie Thomsen took a no-hitter and 1-0 lead into the fifth inning, when the host Saxons scored all 6 of their runs in a 6-5 decision.

Schaumburg improved to 18-1 and 9-0 in the West while Elk Grove (18-5, 6-3) is now tied with Buffalo Grove (12-4, 6-3) in the East.

Illinois State recruit and senior Shannon Felde (8-1) notched the win over Thomsen (7-3). She also had a double.

The Saxons' big fifth inning started with a solo homer run by Elaine Walker.

It was the senior's 18th homer of the season, tying the single-season record for a Mid-Suburban League player previously held by current Arkansas Razorback Loren Krzysko, who hit 18 for Barrington in 2013.

The Saxons went on to take advantage some errors and two more homers by catcher Christina Candotti and third baseman Natalie Napier (1-for-2).

Napier's solo blast was the sixth run and proved to be the difference because the Grens came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the seventh when they had the tying run on base when they game ended on Alex Masnica's deep fly out to right field.

Schaumburg junior Paige Alt, playing first base, went 1-2 with a double, 2 RBI and a stolen base. Right fielder Kaiden Jackson was 1-for-3.

Leading Elk Grove was Brianna Leach, who went 3-for-4 with 2 singles, 4 RBI and a 2-run home run.

Marjorie Sloan also belted a homer for EG, giving the Grens 40 for the season (45 is the school record).

Abbey Sloan (double), Sarah Pauscher and Melissa Picchi also had hits for EG.

Barrington 10, Prospect 0 (6 inn): Loyola recruit and senior Keenen Dolezal (18-5) recorded her 14th shutout of the season tossing a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts and 2 walks. The right-hander improved her career record to 77-18 as the host Fillies improved to 19-5 and 7-2 in the MSL West.

Leading the Fillies offense was junior catcher Rachel Macdonald, who went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.

Other multiple hitters were Carly Kordich (2-for-2, double) and Rachel Krzysko (2-for-3, 2 runs). Catherine McMahon also had a double for Barrington.

Conant 12, Wheeling 0 (5 inn): Lauren Grzelak (2-for-3, 2 runs), Rachel Falbo (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 runs) and Sara Neuman (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) led the offense for the host Cougars (13-4, 7-3), who received a 4-hitter and 5 strikeouts from Jill Gadomski (6-1).

Christina Ambrose, Megan Olsen, Lauren Hart and Abby Greenspan had hits for visiting Wheeling (2-12, 2-7).

Fremd 22, Glenbrook North 3: Host Fremd (20-3, 8-1), which trails Schaumburg (18-1, 9-0) by one game in the MSL West, made it another 20-win season for coach Jim Weaver (363-116-2 in 14 seasons).
