Help Monarch butterflies survive with Green Drinks May 6

In McHenry County, the first Wednesday of each month is Green Wednesday. The public is invited to McHenry County Green Drinks from 5 to 7 p.m. May 6 at Duke's Alehouse & Kitchen, 110 N. Main St. in Crystal Lake.

“Helping Monarch Butterflies Survive” will be presented by Michael Rizo, U.S. Forest Service staff. Rizo has worked in various capacities for the U.S. Forest Service since 2001. Currently, he is working as an urban and community program specialist for the Latin America Team of the U.S. Forest Service where he designs and coordinates outreach, education, and capacity building projects along the migratory flyway of the monarch butterfly. He works with nongovernmental organizations, universities, museums, nature centers, and other groups, with a large focus on work at the community level.

Tentative future topics include: “Biking in McHenry County” on June 3; “Fox River Corridor, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning” on July 1; and “Composting for Apartment Dweller and Small Households,” by Rich Tobias, University of Illinois Master Gardener on Aug. 5.

On the Green Drinks McHenry County's sixth anniversary, there is a tentative program scheduled on “Green America: Green Business Network.” Helping create economy that works for the planet and all the people on it.

The schedule continues on Oct. 7 with “Oaktober” by Jim Anderson of Lake County Forest Preserve District; Nov. 7 with “EarthShare Opportunity” by Thomas Jacks; and on Dec. 2 with “Home Brewing — Holiday Gift Idea.”

The Green Drinks network was founded in North London, England in 1989 and now is active in over 600 cities worldwide. Interested public is always welcome to attend the McHenry County Green Drinks monthly event. Each month there is a short presentation on a different eco-topic plus displays and demonstrations. Also, information about upcoming eco-events and green products and services is made available. Nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks are available, plus a featured “green drink.”
