Huntley blanks Cary-Grove

Enough offense and solid goalkeeping were the ingredients that produced a 2-0 Huntley win over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls soccer action in Huntley Thursday night.

"When Cary-Grove started the season 0-3-1 people thought they would have an off year," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "I knew better. Cary-Grove always play a tough early schedule and (Trojans' coach) Ray (Krystal) does a great job of bringing his team around. My hats off to them. They played a very good game tonight."

With solid defense through most of the first half, Huntley (10-2, 2-0) scored first with 13:45 left on a goal by Alyssa Kaufman off a perfect pass from Brenna Keegan.

"Brenna made it easy for me to score," said Kaufman, "I was able to get a good shot on goal. It was important to score first and play with the lead."

The Red Raiders garnered a key insurance goal with 26:02 left. Off assists from Taryn Jakubowski and Tayah Owens, Deanna Hecht was able to blast a shot past Cary-Grove goalie Miranda Malone to give the Raiders a 2-goal advantage.

Huntley got solid play in goal from Paige Renkosik, who collected 3 saves.

Renkosik made a terrific save with 10:31 remaining.

Cary-Grove's Emma Baker blasted a shot on goal from 30 yards out and Renkosik was able to react quickly enough to push the ball to the edge of the crossbar for the save of the game.

"I never saw the shot and had no idea where the kick came from," said Renkosik. "I just picked up the ball and kept backtracking and I just reacted and was able to make the save. The defense behind me was great. They are so poised and make it easy for me."

Grabner was amazed at Renkosik's athletic ability.

"Paige is a very athletic keeper," said the Huntley coach. "That's just tremendous reaction on her part. That was a huge save. A goal by Cary (Grove) and it is a 2-1 game."

Huntley outshot Cary-Grove (6-5-1, 2-1) 11-5.

Malone collected 5 saves for the Trojans.

"It was an exciting high school soccer game, said Cary-Grove coach Ray Krystal. "It was a good battle and both teams played with great effort. We had some good chances to score. It came down to execution. They are a very deep team and it is tough to find any weaknesses."
