Howe Pumper in Parade, 1941. In the Summer of 1941 the St. Charles Fire Department took delivery of a new fire engine. The engine was built by Howe Company on a General Motors Co. chassis and combination pumper.

Henry Young and Hunneman Steamer operating at Mill fire in St. Charles, c.1895.The fire began in the Grist and Flour Mill, located where the St. Charles Municipal Building stands today. The Mill was equipped with a powerful rotary pump attached to a water wheel. This pump could be used for fighting fires.
