Quickly, Barrington's Peterson gets win No. 700

Barrington softball coach Perry Peterson reached a milestone on Wednesday in unique fashion.

The 45-year-old veteran reached 700 wins faster than anyone in IHSA softball history.

With a 2-0 victory over visiting Hoffman Estates at the Fields of Dreams, Peterson's club improved to 18-5 and 6-2 in the Mid-Suburban West.

Peterson's own record increased to 700-169 in 24 years as a head softball coach (23 at Barrington and one at St. Viator).

"We have been blessed over the years to work with really talented, hardworking athletes who come from quality family settings", said Peterson, who is 684-160 at Barrington. "And that makes all the difference in the world when you ask for the commitment that we are looking for."

The only coaches with more career wins are Randy Wolken of St. Joseph-Ogden (who started in 1980 and currently has more than 920 wins), Ken Grams of Elk Grove (started in 1981 and currently has 845) and Jane Grebner of Williamsville (started in 1985 and has more than 740 wins).

Peterson has reached 700 wins in 869 games while Wolken got to 700 in 886 games.

"We have outstanding community and administrational support for our program and that allows us to keep our entity moving forward each and every day," Peterson added. "All the assistant coaches are dedicated to the program goals and we all collaboratively just try our best each and every season. It's just a whole lot of fun every year."
