Prospect breaks through as Atteo tosses 1-hitter

It was a tight game through 6 innings, as visiting Prospect was clinging to a 2-1 lead over Buffalo Grove in Mid-Suburban East baseball on Wednesday.

That all changed in the top of the seventh.

Mike Piotrowski hit a 3-run homer, Ryan Molini had a run-scoring double, Lucas Karz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Nadler had an RBI single as Prospect put 6 runs up and went on to win 8-1.

Jake Cavaiani finished 3-for-4 and Patrick Donohue, Grant Miller and Molini finished with 2 hits to help Prospect (16-5, 6-2) stay 1 game back of East leader Elk Grove.

Pasquale Atteo, meanwhile, was masterful on the mound, allowing just 1 hit with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts in a complete-game victory for the Knights.

Elk Grove 5, Wheeling 4: Brandon Post doubled and drove in 2 runs, and Elk Grove starter Christian Camacho held off Wheeling in MSL East play.

Camacho and Sean Fege both drove in a run for the Grens (14-4, 7-1) and Matt Wary, Austin Shallcross and Chuck Fleming each stole a base.

Camacho pitched a complete game, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks to go with 10 strikeouts.

Brenden Spillane hit a 2-run homer and finished with 3 hits for Wheeling (6-13, 1-7).

None of the runs allowed by Elk Grove starter Nathan Cooney were earned in a complete-game loss. He allowed 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks as the Wildcats committed 5 errors.

Hersey 9, Rolling Meadows 1: The visiting Huskies produced 13 hits, and five of them went for extra bases in MSL East play.

Brett Harris, Kris Plough, Nick Zouras, Paul Tokar and Campbell White all doubled for Hersey (6-10, 5-3). Brett Harris went 3-for-4 at the top of the order, and Will Trossen, Zouras and White finished with 2 hits apiece.

Brendan Stonequist allowed 5 hits and 6 walks but also struck out seven in a complete-game win.

Luka Pavlakis had the only extra-base hit for Rolling Meadows (3-17, 1-7), a double.

Schaumburg 4, Conant 2: Jack Bellinger tossed another good one as the host Saxons limited Conant to 3 hits in an MSL West victory.

Both teams committed 1 error as Schaumburg (12-8, 4-4) out-hit Conant 7-3.

Bellinger struck out nine and walked two, and Tyler Teele finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for Schaumburg.

Ryan Roberts drove in the run for Conant (12-8, 4-4) in the first inning.

Palatine 2, Fremd 0: Palatine's Chris Refka didn't give Fremd many opportunities, holding the Vikings to 3 singles as the host Pirates earned an MSL West victory.

Refka struck out nine and threw 63 of his 98 pitches for strikes in a complete-game triumph.

Palatine (8-13, 3-6), which did all its scoring in the first inning, got 2 hits apiece from Trace Holloway, Matthew Lamm and Andrew Breytenbach.

Jake LaGasse had 2 hits for Fremd (10-9, 4-4).

Downers Grove South 4, Leyden 0: The visiting Eagles had a rough time against Downers Grove South starter Ty McCulloch, who limited them to 3 hits in West Suburban Gold play.

Michael Wilms provided a quality start for Leyden (8-11), going 6 innings and allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs with 5 strikeouts.
