New, more focused technology curriculum planned for District 21

In an effort to keep up with the constantly evolving fields of technology, Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 is making changes to its technology exploratory programs starting next school year.

District officials outlined the planned changes to the exploratory programs during a presentation this month before the district's board of education.

The programs were first launched 20 years ago to expose students to science, technology, engineering, arts and math education. It currently offers courses in topics such as aerodynamics, rocketry and machining, with students rotating through various modules, said Jason Klein, District 21's chief information officer.

With the recommended changes, each grade level will have its own focus, instead of students rotating through various classes.

Sixth-graders will focus on coding and the basics of mechanical and civil engineering. In seventh grade, students will take what they learn in sixth grade and continue learning about coding and engineering to create objects that move, such as cars and rockets.

In eighth grade, the focus will shift to media production.

"We're hoping the kids will build on what they learn in sixth grade," Klein said.

Surveys showed that students are especially interested in video production and other forms of media, he added.

Klein said the program helps kids think like scientists and mathematicians, and the changes will allow them to explore the topics more deeply.

"It's much more current," school board President Bill Harrison said, adding that the new curriculum should better prepare students for high school math and science classes.

The new technology exploratory curriculum will start in the fall.
