We must get more 'clean' power

With Earth Week just behind us, let's not forget the problems that remain.

Our air still is being polluted by the burning of fossil fuels. The largest polluter in Lake County is the coal plant in Waukegan run by NRG. Our Lake Michigan water still is being polluted. The coal plant again is a main contributor, with mercury-laden emissions and toxic heavy metals seeping from its coal ash ponds.

This must stop. Air pollution and toxic metals hurt everyone, not just the sick. Switching to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, would enable residents of Waukegan and all of Lake County to enjoy healthier lives.

Clean Power Lake County has some excellent suggestions for a better future at its website. Let's plan now and not put off action until another Earth Day.
