Music notes: Edison Park hosts first North by Northwest Highway Music Fest

North by Northwest

Festival season starts a little earlier this year with the addition of Edison Park's new North by Northwest Highway Music Fest, a three-day collection of 45 local and regional bands playing four area establishments - Emerald Isle, 6686 N. Northwest Hwy.; Firewater Saloon, 6689 N. Oliphant Ave.; Edison Park Inn, 6715 N. Olmsted Ave.; and Moretti's, 6727 N. Olmsted Ave. Rock, blues, pop and country are all well-represented, and all the venues are within walking distance of one another, making band-hopping the best way to spend the day. Festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 1, and ends at 11 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Individual shows are $3 at the event; single-day wristband passes are $10; full weekend wristband passes are $25. See the full lineup or get wristbands at nxnwhwy.com.

The O'My's

If a taste of soul is what you're after, check out Chicago's own The O'My's at Lincoln Hall. Frontman Maceo Haymes' smooth and smoky falsettos over the joyous but delicate instrumentals evoke a simpler time, like a throwback to the rise of Chicago soul. Catch the groove with the sultry sounds of Lili K opening. 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. (773) 525-2501 or lh-st.com.

Solo Byrd

Join Chicago native Roger McGuinn, solo folk musician and co-founder of The Byrds, for "An Evening With Roger McGuinn" at Elgin Community College's Art Center. McGuinn promises stories of his time on the music scene, along with the expected classics like "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn, Turn, Turn." 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Elgin Community College's Blizzard Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Tickets cost $32. (847) 622-0300 or tickets.elgin.edu.
