Audition for 'Sondheim On Sondheim' May 6-7 at ECC

Elgin Community College Musical Theatre announces auditions for the summer production of "Sondheim On Sondheim," by appointment from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, and Thursday, May 7. Open auditions are scheduled at 9 p.m. on both dates. Auditions will be held in the Building H ECC Arts Center, SecondSpace Theatre on the Spartan Drive campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Hailed as a "revelatory revue full of wonderful moments" and a "funny, affectionate and revealing tribute to musical theater's greatest living composer and lyricist," "Sondheim On Sondheim" is an intimate portrait of the famed songwriter told through his own words and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage and two-dozen carefully selected Sondheim songs, audiences get an inside look at famed composer Stephen Sondheim's personal life and artistic process.

It was conceived and originally directed by James Lapine. Music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim and Directing and choreographing the musical is Konnie Kay. ECC professor John G. Slawson, DMA, is the artistic and musical director.

Those interested in auditioning should prepare a musical number from any Broadway show other than "Sondheim On Sondheim" and bring sheet music in a three-ring binder for the accompanist that will be provided. Taped accompaniment or a cappella singing will not be permitted. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the dance audition. Auditions are open to ages 16 and up.

If necessary, callbacks are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, May 11.

Rehearsals for "Sondheim On Sondheim" will begin Monday, June 1, at 7 p.m. Regular rehearsals are Monday through Thursday evenings, from 6-10 p.m. The production opens Friday, July 24 and runs weekends through Sunday, Aug. 2.
