ECC music ensembles present annual May performances

The Elgin Community College Concert Choir, Concert Band and Steel Bands offer something for everyone - from classic choral pieces to American favorites and rock hits - during May performances at the Building H Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Tickets are $9 or $7 for students and seniors.

• The ECC Concert Choir will perform "Sounds of Spring" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 4. Under the direction of John G. Slawson, DMA, the ECC Concert Choir will perform a wide range of choral music including pieces by G.F. Handel, W.A. Mozart, Jacques Offenbach, and Johannes Brahms. Musical selections include Handel's "Let Their Celestial Concerts Unite," Mozart's "Dixit" (from Vesperae solennes de confessore)," Brahms' "Der Abend" (The Evening), and Offenbach's "Neighbors' Chorus" from the comic opera La jolie parfumeuse.

• The ECC Steel Bands will offer a "Celebration of Steel: The 'Rock and Roll' Show" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5. The ECC Steel Bands, under the direction of Steve Butters, will perform a celebration of rock songs from a variety of eras performed with an exciting Caribbean flair. Selections include director Butters' original arrangements of Kurt Cobain's "Lithium," Phish classics "The Connection" and "Theme from the Bottom," Jimi Hendrix' "Angel," Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" and "Stairway to Heaven," MGMT's "Time to Pretend," and a medley Frank Zappa songs.

• The ECC Concert Band will present "Americana" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. Under the direction of Jim Kull, the ECC Concert Band will be perform a concert celebrating American musical traditions that includes John Philip Sousa's "The Liberty Bell;" "A Tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein," arranged by Calvin Custer; "Salute to Bob Hope," arranged by Warren Barker; "Armed Forces Salute," arranged by Bob Lowden; and "A Leroy Anderson Portrait," arranged by James Barnes.
