Trial starting for man accused of shooting two McHenry County deputies

The trial of a Holiday Hills man accused of shooting two McHenry County sheriff deputies in a domestic dispute in October is expected to begin today in Woodstock.

Attorneys picked 13 jurors Monday and need one more for a full panel and then two alternates in the trial of Scott B. Peters, 52, who faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Selecting those three remaining people will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, followed by opening arguments in the trial.

Peters is accused firing shots through his closed front door at his home on the 1300 block of Northeast Drive after officers arrived about 1:15 a.m. Oct. 16 for a well-being check.

Khalia Satkiewicz, a 12-year department veteran, was hit in the right leg, and Dwight Maness, a seven-year department veteran, was struck in the left and abdomen.

After a 16-hour manhunt that involved more than 250 law enforcement officers, Peters was found near Route 176 and Smith Road in Crystal Lake, about six miles from his home.

Peters had an "expert" rifle rating while serving in the Army from February 1980 through May 1983 but was listed as going AWOL twice, "desertion" once and spent more than 40 days in military jail.

Peters has been held on $1 million bail since his arrest.

The trial before Judge Sharon Prather is expected last late into the week.
