Power surge continuing for Elk Grove

One year ago, the Elk Grove softball bats clicked for a school-record 45 home runs.

The clicking hasn't stopped.

When sophomore Kylie Thomsen belted her fourth home run on Saturday in the Grens' 20-10 nonconference victory at Glenbrook North, it was the team's 35th round tripper of the season and there is still more than a month left in the season.

Thomsen's blast was one of 17 hits for the Grens, who raised their record to 16-4 behind pitchers Sabra Morton and junior Anna Bonder.

The sophomore Morton (7-2) went 5 innings for the win, striking out eight while Bonder (3-0) recorded 2 strikeouts in two innings.

Other top hitters for the Mid-Suburban East leaders were Brianna Leach (2-for-2, triple), Marjorie Sloan (2-for-6, double), Melissa Picchi (2-for-3, double) and Morton (2-for-3) and Shannon Taucher (double).

Niles North 12, Prospect 8: Visiting Prospect (5-8) was led on offense by led by Alyssa Cacini (2-for-4, home run, 2 walks, 2 RBI), Lauren Caldrone (3-for-4, double) and Emily Saenz (2-for-4, walk, 2 RBI).

Cacini's second homer of the season, a 2-run shot, and a 2-run, two-out single by Saenz (her second in two days) gave Prospect a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Mundelein 25, Hersey 7 (5 inn): Senior Cassie Zouras and sophomore Kaitlyn Denten had homers for host Hersey (5-13) while sophomore teammate Katie Wingerter doubled in the nonconference game.

Wauconda 8, Fremd 5: Fremd (16-3) was led on offense by Julie Josten (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Julia Wacker (1-for-3, double).

Josten, Straup (RBI), Reagan Schneider, Jessica Mazur and Becca Uhrich scored the runs for the Vikings in a tourney game hosted by Libertyville.
