Elgin home damaged in fire

A fire Saturday morning left an Elgin house uninhabitable, fire officials said.

Elgin firefighters responded at about 11 a.m. to the 500 block of North Alfred for a house fire with reports of a person trapped inside, fire officials said in a news release.

A man who escaped the house told firefighters that his daughter was in a bedroom at the northwest corner of the house. Firefighters searched for her, but she had actually left the house already, unbeknown to family. The home's living room was extensively damaged with moderate damage to the rest of the house. Fire officials continue to investigate the blaze, which did about $40,000 in damage.
