European airlines compete to release apps for first Apple Watch

European airlines British Airways and Air France will be among the first companies competing with applications for the Apple Watch when the device is released this week.

British Airways passengers will be able to use their Apple Watch as a boarding pass and to check flight details, the carrier owned by IAG SA said in a statement Wednesday. Users can swipe for more information such as connecting flights and routes, and the weather at their destination.

Air France said it will also have a new application for the device. Deutsche Lufthansa AG said customers using its standard app for iPhone or iPad will "automatically" be able to use it on the watch. Apple Inc.'s smartwatch will reach consumers in nine countries on April 24. It comes in two sizes, with the Sport model priced at $349 and $399 and the midrange version starting at $549.

To make full use of its capabilities, the watch, which has a color touch screen, needs to be paired with an iPhone. The device shows text messages and emails, and offers features called "digital touch" that allow watch-to-watch communication. It can also track health and fitness information and send calendar reminders.

"With a quick look at their wrist, the glance screen will deliver them everything they need to know about their upcoming flight," Sara Dunham, BA's head of marketing, retail and direct channels, said in the statement.
