Man, 26, hospitalized after morning shooting in Elgin

Elgin police are investigating a Friday morning shooting on the city's east side that left a 26-year-old man hospitalized with what authorities said were injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police were called at 10:15 a.m. to the 700 block of Dundee Avenue where they found the victim, an Elgin man, and took him to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

"He was outside the residence. He was shot by a person (on foot) multiple times," said Elgin Police Cmdr. Dan O'Shea, who declined to say where on his body this victim was wounded.

The department's Gang Crimes Unit and Major Investigations Division were investigating the shooting, O'Shea said.

O'Shea said an Elgin police officer assigned to the nearby Larsen Middle School, 665 Dundee Ave., put the school into "secure mode," and also worked with officials at McKinley and Coleman Elementary schools to also put those facilities into secure mode. Secure mode is heightened security but less than a full-blown lockdown.
