Here's why DuPage is really 'Cool'

As we gear up for Earth Day today, it's imperative that all of us do our part to conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support sustainable practices.

Last week DuPage County launched its "Cool DuPage" initiative aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving air quality. The campaign encourages citizens, businesses and local government agencies to cut back on energy consumption in order to achieve a countywide reduction of emissions 10 percent by 2020 and 20 percent by 2030 (based on 2007 levels).

DuPage County leads by example. For more than two decades, it has been at the forefront of environmental practices. Now DuPage leaders are taking those lessons learned and educating citizens and businesses about how their energy consumption can make a big difference for the environment and save money.

Conserving energy not only makes sense, but it's just good business. It delivers results for consumers by lowering utility or energy bills. Studies have found that the energy efficiency field and its associated activities boost the economy. When we invest in energy efficiency, we put people to work and incentivize the manufacturing of products that help us be smarter energy consumers. More importantly, energy conservation improves air quality and makes a difference in the lives of those who suffer from upper respiratory problems.

The 2,000 members of the local Sierra Club River Prairie Group commend DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, county board members and the DuPage Green Government Council for their environmental leadership.

We support Cool DuPage and will do our part to energize residents and businesses to achieve positive results for the environment.
