Downers Grove man gets 6½ years for armed robbery

The third of three men charged in the May 2014 armed robbery of a Downers Grove woman in her driveway is headed to prison.

Devante Miles, 19, was sentenced to 6½ years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to armed robbery with a bludgeon.

Assistant State's Attorney Robert Stanker said the three men, all from Downers Grove, were waiting in the woman's driveway when she returned from work at about 10:30 p.m. May 6. Stanker said one of the men was at the front door when the victim left her vehicle and walked toward her home and one of them hit her in the head with a pellet gun.

The three fled after stealing the woman's cellphone.

The victim previously stated she required four stitches to close the wound caused by the blow and the attack caused her to lose trust in others.

Judge John Kinsella said he does not understand why Miles would participate in a "really, really stupid and dangerous" plan.

"For a 19-year-old, you've got quite a whopper on your hands for such a colossally stupid thing to do," Kinsella said. "I hope you feel a little shame for what you did, you and your knucklehead friends."

Tallen Patrick Casey, 21, is serving a 6-year sentence for the crime and Jamarrion King, 18, was sentenced last week to 7½ years in prison.

Miles, who has been held on $300,000 bail since his arrest, must serve half of his sentence and receives credit for 351 days served in DuPage County jail.
