How to participate in Oakton Earth Week activities

Go Green! Celebrate Earth Week, through April 25, at Oakton's campuses in Des Plaines, 1600 East Golf Road and Skokie, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., with a variety of ecology, sustainability, and environmental topics presented through lectures, restoration opportunities and nature walks. All activities are free and open to the public.

From 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, in Room 1604 (Des Plaines), sustainability professional Laura Matthews, who runs Miss Green Genes, a company that makes unique art pieces and furniture from reclaimed materials, will present "Recycling Tips and Repurposing for Art." Her lecture will educate participants about proper recycling techniques and how to use discarded or used materials to make art.

Attend "Sustainable Food and Healthy Eating," a panel presentation about plant-based diets and heart-healthy food choices, from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, April 23, in Room 1550 (Des Plaines). Presenters include Kevin Fullin, a cardiologist with United Hospital Systems in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Robert Grillo, founder of Free from Harm, an Illinois organization that promotes farmed animal rescue, education, and advocacy.

Looking to make an immediate impact? Roll up your sleeves and help eliminate invasive garlic mustard or prepare the community garden for the upcoming planting season. Enjoy nature and bird walks along the Des Plaines River. Celebrate the natural and artistic highlights of the Des Plaines campus, as well as the latest sustainable technologies, with a tour of The Lee Center, a 93,000-square-foot building named after Margaret B. Lee, Ph.D., the college's third president.

"Oakton is committed to being 'green' all year long and the weeklong celebration is designed to inspire and educate the community about how we can make every day Earth Day," said Debra Kutska, Oakton's sustainability specialist.
