Regular season ends with loss for Wolves

The Chicago Wolves closed their regular season with a 5-2 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Sunday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

Forwards Jeremy Welsh and Robby Fabbri scored for the eight-seeded Wolves (40-29-6-1), who open the Calder Cup playoffs at home against top-seeded Utica at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is a 7 p.m. home game Friday before the scene shifts to Utica for the rest of the Western Conference quarterfinal. The Wolves, who have qualified for the playoffs in 17 of their 21 seasons, split four games with the Comets this season.

"Utica is a big, strong team," said Wolves coach John Anderson. "They're not fancy, but they get the job done. Their defensemen are very efficient, but they also jump into the play and they have a really good goaltender."

The Wolves' Matt Climie (15-14-3, 17 saves) was in goal.
