Barrington makes it a Peterson milestone

With a 5-0 triumph over visiting Libertyville on Saturday afternoon, Barrington Hall of Fame coach Perry Peterson became the fourth winningest coach in IHSA softball history.

He passed Thornwood's Gary Lagesse, who won three state titles in the 1990s and finished with 694 career wins.

The only three coaches with more wins than Peterson are St. Joseph-Ogden's Randy Wolken (who began the season with more than 900), Elk Grove's Ken Grams (839) and Williamsville's Jane Grebner (721).

Peterson's 695th career win on Saturday saw senior Keenan Dolezal (12-3) post her eighth shutout of the season.

The Loyola recruit struck out 10 and walked two while tossing a 2-hitter (both hits by junior cleanup hitter Jamie Stevens who was 2-for-3 for the 10-4 Wildcats).

The Fillies (13-3) were led on offense by catcher Rachel Macdonald (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and shortstop Liz Sweeney (2-for-3, RBI).

"We came out really strong (all 5 runs in the first two innings)" Peterson said. "Then we were really consistent defensively from that point on."

Fremd 5, Cary-Grove 2: The winningest team in the Mid-Suburban League (14-1) received a 5-hitter from Hailey Goodwin (5-0) with 6 strikeouts in five innings.

Lea Barrett (5-0) notched the save striking out 2 and allowing 1 hit in the final two innings.

Julia Wacker (2-for-3, 2 RBI) belted a pair of doubles, including the one in the innings that hit the yellow capping on the left-center field fence.

Elk Grove sweeps: The host Grenadiers defeated Maine South Grenadiers 5-3 and 13-12.

Junior third baseman Sarah Pauscher had 3 homers on the day, giving her a team-high 12 for the season.

She belted one in Game 1 while Brianna Leach and Haley Itzenthaler each had doubles. Shannon Taucher went 2-for-2 in the game.

Kylie Thomsen (3-2) threw a 3-hitter, allowing just one in the final six innings.

She struck out ten and walked one.

Pauscher (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and Leach (2-for-4, 4 RBI) each belted 3-run homers in the high-scoring second game. Pauscher also had a solo blast.

Marjorie Sloan went 4-for-4 in the game with 2 doubles.

Other multiple hitters for the Grens were Itzenthaler (2-for-4) and Alex Masnica (2-for-4, double).

Anna Bonder (3-0) notched the win and the save. She pitched the first 4â…” innings and got the final two outs of the game.

For the week, Pauscher had 6 homers in five games.

Conant 5, South Elgin 1: Sam Gadomski (4-0) struck out five in five innings to earn the win for visiting Conant (10-1). Kim Neuman threw the final two innings.

The Cougars' offense was led by DeeDee Durr (2-for-3, RBI, 1 run) and Kim Zaucha (2-for-3, RBI, 1 run).

Sydney Correa had a hit 2 RBI for the Cougars. Lauren Grzelak, Alissa Wachal, Hailey Rothstein each scored a run for the winners.

Schaumburg sweeps: The host Saxons raised their record to 13-1 with 16-0 and 16-3 five-inning wins over Jacobs.

Shannon Felde (5-1) notched the win in Game 1 and also went 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI.

Other top hitting Saxons were Elaine Walker (3-for-4, 2 home runs, 5 RBI), Kaiden Jackson (2-for-3), Paige Alt (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI), Natalie Napier (2-for-4, RBI), Michelle Birkholz (4-for-4, RBI), Roxanne Kakareka (3-for-3, double, RBI) and Alexandra Cook (1-for-4, 4 RBI).

In Game 2, Alt (7-0) got the win on the mound and also went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and 3 RBI.

Other offensive leaders were Walker (3-for-3, home run, 2 RBI), Felde (4-for-4, double, RBI), Napier (3-for-3, RBI) and Kakareka (2-for-3, home run, 3 RBI).

Sarah Schwind, Micaela Encarnación, Birkholz (RBI), Cook and Brittney Butt (2 RBI) also had hits for the Saxons.

Hersey splits: Hersey defeated Vernon Hills 10-2 and dropped a 5-4 decision to Deerfield at the Vernon Hills quad.

Senior Isabella McGinnis earned her first varsity win by tossing the first 4.1 innings against Vernon Hills. Freshman Renee Portenlager went the final 2.2.

Katie Wingerter (3-for-5), Danielle Sychowski (2-for-4), Payton Anderskow (3-for-4) and Sophia Cano all doubled for Hersey (5-9).

Anderskow belted her first career homer by hitting the top of the left field fence with two outs in the top of fifth inning to give Hersey a 4-2 lead against Deerfield.

However, the Warriors scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.

Wingerter (2-for-4), sophomore Maddie Flynn (2-for-4) and Jackie Bednar (2-for-4) also led the Huskies' offense.

Prospect 9, Glenbrook North 2: Visiting Prospect (4-6) opened the scoring in the top of the first when freshman Alyssa Cacini (2-for-4, 2 runs, stolen base) reached first on an infield hit and Rachel Trebswether (1-for-4, 3 runs) reached on an infield error before Casey Lenski (1-for-2, 3 RBI) hit a towering blast to right center for a 3-run homer. It was her fifth homer of the season.

The Knights never looked back as Cacini (1-3) earned her first varsity pitching, pitching 6 scoreless innings. She allowed only 4 hits and struck out three.

Lindsey Lecomte was 3-for-4 for Prospect while Delilah Malczewski (2 RBI), Kelly Marshall and Cate Meersman had the other hits for the Knights.

"It was great to get back on the winning track," said Prospect coach Jim Adair. " We played a complete game the whole way through today. Alyssa Cacini was awesome, the defense backed her up and we got the right hits at the right time."

Meadows drops pair: Visiting Evanston topped the Mustangs 7-6 in nine innings and 16-5 in five innings.

Lauren Hattory was 2-for-2 with an RBI while teammate Elizabeth Elkins was 1-for-1 with a double and 3 RBI for Meadows in the opener.

In Game 2, top hitters for the hosts were Jordan Giachetti (2-for-5, triple, RBI) and Elkins (3-for-5, double, 2 RBI). Paige Connor also had a double for the Mustangs (1-12).

Wheeling drops pair: Visiting Glenbrook South won 14-1 (six innings) and 17-2 (five innings) over the host Wildcats (0-9).

Leyden 11, Elmwood Park 1 (6 inn.): Jodi DuBrock 2-4 (triple, 3 RBI) and Kendall Duwal (3-for-4, 2 RBI) led the offense for Leyden (8-4) while Sammi Caputo earned the win.
