New children's space opens at Helen Plum Library

Young patrons of the Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard now have a new space to read and play.

The library celebrated the opening of its new early literacy space, named the Robin's Nest, with a variety of activities Saturday morning.

Funds for the project came from the Edgar Lewis Robbins Family Fund, which is earmarked for the library's children's department.

Lombard teacher Carol Ann Robbins left a donation in her will to create the fund. The new space, which gives kids an additional 500 square feet to play, has been named the Robin's Nest in honor of the Robbins family.

Early literacy development skills that will be emphasized in the space include singing, talking and playing, library officials said. New play items, including a Lego table, will be introduced in the space, and some will be rotated seasonally.

The wall on the east side of the department has been replaced with an open entrance to the Robin's Nest, which also has updated chairs, relocated computers and a new youth services help desk.
