Softball: Northwest roundup

Hersey led Fremd 1-0 after four innings on Friday afternoon in Arlington Heights.

But the powerful Fremd softball bats got rolling and the Vikings were able to come away with a 5-1 victory despite 10 strikeouts by Hersey sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Denten.

Fremd pitcher Lea Barrett remained perfect at 5-0 as she struck out six in the complete-game performance.

Senior Jessica Schmiederer's single with one out in the bottom of the fourth scored courtesy runner Danielle Sychowski for the Huskies' 1-0 lead.

Fremd (13-1, 3-0) tied the game in the fifth when Julia Wacker raced home on a wild pitch.

The Vikes got ahead in the sixth when Julie Josten singled home Kylie Hess with two outs.

Freshman Jessica Mazur capped the scoring when she belted her first career home run, a 3-run shot to center field in the top of the seventh.

Mazur also had a double and ended up 4-for-4 with 3 RBI while Josten was 2-for-4.

Katie Wingerter (2-for-4, 2 doubles) and Remy Gerew (2-for-3) paced Hersey (4-8, 0-3). Denten added a double.

Schaumburg 10, Wheeling 1: Visiting Schaumburg improved to 11-1 and 4-0 in the MSL West as junior Paige Alt ran her record to 6-0 by striking out 18 in a 2-hitter.

Alt also went 3-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI.

Other top hitters for the Saxons were Elaine Walker (2-for-5), Sarah Schwind (2-for-4) and Christina Candotti (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI)

Shannon Felde (double, 2 RBI) and Brittney Butt also had hits for the Saxons.

Nikki Mikosz tripled and had an RBI for Wheeling (0-7, 0-3) while Lauren Hart had the other hit.

Palatine 8, Rolling Meadows 7: Freshman Maddie Craver (3-2) struck out three and threw five innings for the win. Erin Davis pitched the last two innings for Palatine (5-9, 2-2) which led 8-0 before Meadows scored 7 times in the bottom of the sixth.

Nora Walsh (3-for-3), Emily Griffin (2-for-4, RBI), Victoria Parrott (2-for-4) and Reggie Much (double) led the Pirates offense.

Sophomore Elizabeth Elkins (3-for-4, 4 RBI) belted a grand slam for her first career homer with one out in the seventh. Paige Connor (3-for-4) and Lauren Hattory (2-for-3) were other multiple hitters for Meadows (1-10, 0-3) which also received a double from Meghan Slowik.

"Our kids keep battling with good attitudes," said Mustangs coach Tony Wolanski. "And that's all we can ask."

Hoffman Estates 16, Prospect 6: Junior Tracy Osimowicz went 4-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI and was also the winning pitcher as visiting Hoffman improved to 8-5 and 2-1 in the MSL West.

Other top hitters for the Hawks were Jordyn Fera (2-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Caitlyn Farina (3-for-5, 3 runs, 3 RBI). Teammate Veronica Cardella scored 2 runs with an RBI and a walk. Brynn Connelly also doubled for Hoffman.

Casey Lenski belted her fourth home run and went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Knights (3-6, 0-3).

"Hoffman Estates came into our place, and handed it to us," said Prospect coach Jim Adair. "They put on a hitting clinic. My team is extremely disappointed in our last two outings. We need to get better fast."

Conant 14, Elk Grove 3 (5 inn.): Dream Aaron (3-for-3, home run, double), Alissa Wachal (3-for-4, home run, 4 RBI, 2 runs), Elisa Ambrose (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Morgan Bihun (3-for-3, 2 runs) led visiting Conant (9-1, 3-0).

Winning pitcher Kim Neuman (5-1) also belted a homer while teammates Hailey Rothstein and Kim Zaucha doubled.

Sarah Pauscher and Alex Masnica homered for Elk Grove (10-4, 1-2) while teammate Marjorie Sloan had a double.

Maine South 17, St. Viator 12: Maine South rallied from an 8-0 deficit to win the conference game in Arlington Heights.

Krystal Harris had 4 hits, including a triple and double and 2 RBI for the Lions. Olivia Michalik (2 RBI), Addie Swiderski and Haley Robinson each had 2 hits for Viator while junior teammate Meg Naughton belted her first career home run.

Leyden 13, Niles West 3 (6 inn): Winning pitcher Kendall Duwal (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 3 RBI), Jodi DuBrock (1-for-3, triple, 2 RBI), Sammi Caputo (2-for-4, triple, 3 RBI), Rachael Morrison (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Kat Modrich (2-for-4) led Leyden (7-4) in the nonconference game.
