Wisconsin's Kaminsky returns to Benet to have jersey retired

Wisconsin basketball star Frank Kaminsky yesterday returned to his high school alma mater — Benet Academy in Lisle — where the school retired his uniform No. 44. But it was Kaminsky's off-court personality as much as his on-court dominance that earned him the recognition, Benet Principal Steve Marth said. “He has remained true to the to his Benet roots,” Marth said. State Senate tries to save O'Hare's diagonal runways to combat noise

Legislation approved yesterday by the state Senate seeks to prohibit Chicago from retiring two diagonal runways at O'Hare International Airport in the hopes of evenly distributing jet noise. But the Federal Aviation Administration may ultimately have jurisdiction over the matter. Legislation also calls for a total of 10 runways in the end. Full story.

DuPage deputy files second federal suit against sheriff

A longtime DuPage County sheriff's deputy, already part of a federal lawsuit against Sheriff John Zaruba claiming retaliation, has filed a second suit, this one alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Deputy Eric Koty, a 13-year veteran of the department, says he has a femoral hip impingement with a torn labrum, preventing him from riding in his assigned Ford Crown Victoria. He requested to be reassigned to an Explorer but wasn't allowed to change vehicles. Full story.

Federal College of DuPage probe won't hamper state audit push yet

Suburban lawmakers continue to push for a state audit of College of DuPage for now, while a federal investigation into the college is launched. The federal probe was revealed Wednesday when the college released subpoenas it received seeking documents, records and account information. State Sen. Tom Cullerton has asked his staff to find out if state lawmakers' efforts would interfere with the feds. Full story.

No charges after fetus' remains found in backyard of Streamwood home

Though Streamwood police discovered the remains of a first-trimester fetus buried in a makeshift grave in the backyard of a home, they say they won't be pursuing charges against the mother. The 21-year-old mother said she miscarried during an unreported episode of domestic violence and buried the baby's remains at the Lincoln Court home, but investigators could not link domestic violence or other foul play to the miscarriage. Kane County Board frustrated that sheriff again misses monthly update

Kane County Board members say they will prepare to slash Sheriff Don Kramer's budget once again, with or without his input. For the second month in a row, Kramer was a no-show for his monthly report to the board. “The sheriff is not here,” said board member John Martin. “... We have a $500,000 problem remaining in this budget, and we don't know anything.” The sheriff did send feedback in other ways. Full story.

The Kris Bryant wait is over. The Cubs will call up their third-base prospect in time for this afternoon's home game against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field. The Cubs might not have called him up so soon, but their hand was forced when third baseman Mike Olt was discovered to have a hairline fracture of his right ulna, the result of being hit by a pitch last weekend at Colorado, writes Bruce Miles.

Blackhawks to start Crawford in Game 2

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said it was “a no-brainer” and “an easy decision” to put Corey Crawford, who surrendered 3 first-period goals in the first game of the playoffs, back in net for tonight Game 2, despite Scott Darling being a major reason the Hawks prevailed in a 4-3 double-overtime thriller against the Predators Wednesday night. “I think it was a tougher decision to pull (Crawford) out last night,” Quenneville said.
