Wheaton Park District to host Go Fly a Kite event

You don't have to be Mary Poppins to understand the allure of flying a kite as hundreds of folks will demonstrate next month when they come together for Wheaton Park District's annual Go Fly a Kite event.

Participants can bring a kite of their own to fly or simply enjoy the precision of professional kite flyers - including members of The Chicago Fire Kite Team - during the celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Graf Park, 1855 Manchester Road.

The highlight of the event is the Grand Launch at 11 a.m., where the park district attempts to break its record of 834 kites flying simultaneously.

New this year, judges will gather at 1:30 p.m. to reveal the winners of the Most Unique Kite Contest.

In addition to all that, this year's party features family-friendly games, kite sales, a business vendor expo and concessions.

"After the long winter, this annual kite event is the perfect way to kick off spring," said Kristina Nemetz, supervisor of special events for the park district.
