3 ways seniors can keep themselves, property safe

The Southeast Kane County TRIAD organization, a multi-law enforcement and social service agency group dedicated to reducing criminal victimization of older persons, has scheduled three community events designed to keep seniors safe.

Frauds and Scams: Workshop presented by Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Aurora Township Senior Center, 900 N. Lake St. The workshop will cover current telephone, email, and door-to-door scams that most commonly target seniors and explain how seniors can greatly reduce their chances of being victimized.

Document shredding: Seniors are invited to bring any documents that contain personal information for shredding from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, May 8, at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave. Officials recommend the shredding of documents that include tax returns older than seven years; and credit card, banking, and other statements so they don't fall into the hands of identity thieves. Expired, unused, and unwanted medications will also be accepted for safe disposal.

Senior Picnic: At 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, seniors are invited to an afternoon of food, fun, and entertainment at the annual TRIAD Senior Picnic at Phillips Park, 1000 Ray Moses Drive. The picnic is a great way for seniors to learn more about TRIAD, while enjoying good friends, Bingo games, door prizes, and other activities. A $3 prepaid donation is requested.

Make Your Wishes Known: This seminar covering information on how seniors can make sound medical care and other self-directed decisions, will be presented at 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11, at the Prisco Center. Information on programs that assist seniors and persons with disabilities provide first responders with critical information about their physical conditions during emergency situations will also be available. Reservations are required by calling Jennifer at (630) 859-8606.

The Southeast Kane County TRIAD, formed in September 1997, capitalizes on a program philosophy that enhances the delivery of law enforcement services to senior individuals so they can feel safe in their own communities. The philosophy brings law enforcement, older volunteers and social and aging network professionals together to assess the needs and concerns of seniors in their communities. TRIAD's concept was originally established in the 1970s.

TRIAD meetings are held at 9 a.m. the second Friday of each month at Prisco Center. For information on TRIAD, call the Aurora Police at (630) 256-5000, Montgomery Police at (630) 897-8707, or Aurora Township at (630) 897-8777.
