Dundee Lions deliver used eyeglasses to Illinois Lions Foundation

During the past six months, the Dundee Township Lions Club collected more than 850 used eyeglasses.

After sorting the glasses, they are sent to the Lions of Illinois Foundation where they will be prepared for distribution throughout the world. Collecting and recycling glasses is a major ongoing project by the Lions.

Locally, the Lions collect glasses at all their fundraising events. In addition they have collection boxes throughout Dundee Township.

Many of the local optometrists' offices help with collection. This includes Lossman Eye Care Associates, Dr. Richard Weinstein and Simpson Eye Center. In addition recycling containers are at the 7 Hills Medical Center, Dundee Township Senior Center, Dundee Township Public Library, Dundee-Crown High School, First Congregational Church, St. James Episcopal Church, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Moose Lodge.

The Lions at their recent meeting had the executive director of the Illinois Lions Foundation. He reports over a million glasses were collected in Illinois last year. Although it seems hard to believe, there continues to remain a significant need for secondhand glasses throughout the world.

In addition, the Lions have started collecting hearing aids, cellphones, keys and used ink cartridges. These items also can be left in the collection boxes.

The Dundee Lions meet regularly at the Village Squire in West Dundee.
