Algonquin launches online platform, mobile app for reporting issues

Algonquin residents now can report potholes and other neighborhood concerns, such as littering, flooding, damaged sidewalks and malfunctioning traffic signals using their cellphones, computers, or other Wi-Fi devices.

The village last week launched Algonquin Fix It, an online and mobile platform, which allows residents to report quality-of-life issues and request services.

"The system provides the village the opportunity to address community concerns in a new and innovative manner with increased efficiency," Village President John Schmitt said. "The reporting platform empowers citizens to participate in the improvement of their neighborhoods."

Mobile apps are available for iPhone and Android devices. Residents may also use a Facebook app, facebook.com/AlgonquinIL, and SeeClickFix.com to report problems.

Previously, residents used email to report problems through the village website. Now, they can provide a location, description and photos of the issue in real time. Once a service request is made, anyone "watching" the area will receive email alerts and get updates when the issue has been resolved.

Residents also can comment on and vote to fix problems submitted by neighbors, and create their own "watch areas" to receive notifications about all issues reported in their community.

"What we really want to do is make it as easy as possible to get information so we can resolve issues," said Michael Kumbera, assistant village manager. "It's very flexible and adaptable to our needs."

He added residents already have gotten the message.

"People are using it," Kumbera said. "It's steady. We never had an app (before). That's a huge improvement. The usability is much smoother. On our website, we see a lot more mobile, tablet traffic. We've got to keep adapting to where the market demand is."
