'Creak Freaks' workshop explores science in a fun way

The Elgin Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America and the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center will offer a joint workshop "Stream Discovery and Creek Freaks Workshop" from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, at the lodge, 899 Jay St.

Educators of all kinds are invited to attend. Space is limited. Register no later than April 16. There is a $65 registration fee. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for "Creek Freaks."

Designed for children, age 10-14, the curriculum and program allows children and educators to discover science in a fun new way. This Creek Freaks program is an interactive hands-on curriculum that engages kids in outdoor adventure and learning.

The program provides students with the opportunity to assess water quality in their community by monitoring macroinvertebrates and water chemistry in a local stream.

Water quality data are then uploaded to the National Geographic's FieldScope mapping and data platform for comparison with student data in other Illinois watersheds. This workshop is for formal and nonformal educators. Visit www.creekfreaks.net for more information and to see a copy of the curriculum. Also, be sure to check out the Creek Freaks video for a feature on the after -school programs.
