Roselle skating center raising money for tornado relief

Area skaters have a chance to help recovery efforts for victims of last week's tornado in Fairdale.

Coachlite Skate Center in Roselle is donating all admission fees from this week's night open skating to the relief efforts and also plans to accept donations during that time. Open skating is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the facility at 1291 W. Bryn Mawr.

The tragedy hit close to home with the skating center because one of its longtime employees lives in the Fairdale area and very nearly was in the path of destruction, General Manager Ed Wanders said. That's when organizers got the idea to help others who were not so fortunate.

"It was just very close to our Coachlite family," he said.

The weekly open skating time usually attracts between 150 and 200 skaters, but organizers are hoping to at least double that number for this week's fundraising effort. Admission is $1.

Proceeds will be given to the Red Cross and designated for use in the Fairdale area.
