Fourth inning key to Glenbard South win over WW South

A breakout fourth inning proved to be the difference as Glenbard South took advantage of what was given to it, beating Wheaton Warrenville South 8-4 in nonconference baseball on Saturday in Glen Ellyn.

After trading runs in the first to make it 2-2 and Glenbard South edging out a run in the third, the Raiders capitalized on three errors from the Tigers in the fourth to put up 5 runs and take a 8-2 lead. Glenbard South allowed two more runs in the fifth but held on to take the win.

"I thought our kids played a solid game, to be honest with you," said Glenbard South coach Mike Riley. "We had a tough game last night, an extra-inning game that we won, so we're here on short rest today. I was kind of wondering how the kids were going to come out, but we gave up two quick runs and we came right back and swung the bats in the bottom of the inning and kind of showed ourselves we were going to be here for the whole game."

With the score 3-2 in the fourth inning, two errors and a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly from Michael Ashe put up a run, but another walk from Pilalis loaded the bases once more.

After a pop out to make it two outs, a grounder from Dylan Brambora forced another error from the Tigers, which scored two to make it 6-4.

With runners on second and third, a single from Brian Ashe drove in two more runs to extend the lead to 8-2.

"There were some errors that we took advantage of to get some things going, and this team's put the bat on the ball pretty well," Riley said of his team's offense, which had no extra-base hits.

The inning had three of the Tigers' five errors on the game, all of which came in the infield.

"Defensively, we've been absolutely terribleā€¦," said Tigers coach Tim Brylka. "Can't keep giving teams outs. Same thing happened yesterday. We can't expect to win if we're going to play that kind of way defensively or put that effort on the field."

Wheaton Warrenville South responded with two runs in the fifth when Justin Kelly ripped a home run off. Three singles then led to an RBI for Mike Zavala.

Kelly went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and a home run.

Alexander McGimpsey picked up the win for Glenbard South while Wheaton Warrenville South pitcher Joe Pilalis picked up the loss. The Raiders had 11 hits on the game, while the Tigers had 10.
