College of DuPage Hosts Excellence in History Presentation April 20

College of DuPage will host a free presentation, "Gender Equality in Nicaragua," on Monday, April 20, as part of the 21st annual Carter D. Carroll Excellence in History Awards ceremony. The program will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Health and Science Center (HSC), Room 1234, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

During the program, COD Assistant Professor of History John Paris will discuss the dichotomy of the Nicaraguan woman experience. Nicaraguan women have had uniquely strong levels of empowerment, as well as consistent and systematic forms of oppression throughout the nation's history.

"During this presentation, I will discuss the contradictory status of women in Nicaragua, with a particular focus on the development of this dynamic from the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1979 to the present," Paris said.

Paris earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in History from Northern Illinois University, with a specific focus on Latin American History. He has served as co-chair of COD's Latin American Studies Committee and is the co-director of the Costa Rica Summer Study Abroad Program.

Prior to the "Gender Equality in Nicaragua" lecture, the College will recognize this year's winners of the Carter D. Carroll Excellence in History award. Since its inception in 1994, the award has honored students for excellence in writing achievement in the field of history. Professor Carter D. Carroll was a founding faculty member at COD who taught history at the College for more than two decades.
