Professional writers offer tips for Libertyville High School students

Poetry, music, sports and other forms of writing were highlighted for Libertyville High School students during the fifth annual Writers Week in the school's auditorium.

Professional writers spoke to students throughout the week about their experiences in their fields of writing. Thursday featured singer/songwriter Andy Suzuki of New York City who talked about the song-writing process and also performed some of his songs.

"Writing music is one of the most beautiful, complicated, rewarding and stressful things you can do," Suzuki said

English teacher Mary Cate Schoenbeck said Music Day is typically the culmination of Writers Week and a favorite of the students.

"We have all different types of writers," Schoenbeck said. "We try to convey to the kids that writing is not just about writing a thesis statement in your English class. It's about writing what you love."

Writers Week is sponsored in part by the District 128 Foundation for Learning. Since writing is an integral part of every content area, all classes were encouraged to participate.
