Hinsdale Humane Society invites kids to read with therapy dogs at Oak Brook store

Pet lovers will have an opportunity to drop in and R.E.A.D. with the Dogs during an event coordinated by the Hinsdale Humane Society from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Room & Board, 2525 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook.

As part of the Reading Education Assistance Dogs program, owners and their registered animals typically visit libraries and schools to work with children on their reading skills. This event brings together R.E.A.D. dogs (and a cat) to interact with and read stories to children in preschool through fourth grade.

The free event will include at least four therapy teams to provide story time in multiple sections of the store at four different times.

The times will be staggered on the half-hour so children will be able to attend different groups throughout the two-hour event. The reading sessions are expected to last 15 minutes each, followed by time to interact with the animals and work on craft projects.

Kym Iffert, Hinsdale Humane Society's humane educator, will present dog safety demonstrations on topics such as how to approach a dog.
