Wheaton Academy pitches past St. Edward

It wasn't exactly baseball weather, but Wheaton Academy and St. Edward toughed it out anyway.

And the Warriors were better able to turn the frigid conditions to their advantage, coming away with a 5-1 win in Metro Suburban action at Wing Park on Tuesday.

Two Warrior pitchers combined to hold the Green Wave to 1 hit while Jake Lindstedt had a pair of RBI singles for Wheaton Academy (6-2).

"The pitchers just want to throw strikes," said Warriors coach Brad Byrne. "Let your defense make plays. You don't want to walk them, you want to keep those guys (on defense) active out there on a day like today."

Starter Luke Kram and reliever Bryce Sandberg were able to do just that. Kram, limited to fastballs and changeups to protect a sore shoulder, held the Wave to 1 hit and 1 walk. Sandberg took over and retired the final nine St. Edward batters to nail it down.

St. Edward got on the board in the second when Jack Tierney smacked the Wave's only hit leading off and later scored on a wild pitch.

"We're not losing horribly. We're in every game," said Green Wave coach Tim Dovichi. "Things just aren't falling our way. Take away the 2 errors by our shortstop and maybe we lose 2, 3-1."

One of those errors led to the game's first run. Luis Ramos reached on an overthrow with 1 out, eventually scoring on Lindstedt's single.

Wave starter Patrick Costello escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the second, and his teammates tied it in the bottom half. The inning was still something of a win for Wheaton Academy when Kram escaped a based-loaded, no-out situation allowing just the 1 run.

The Warriors then scored 2 runs in both the third and fourth innings to break it open. Chris Johnson's double started things off in the third, with Kram and Noah Ritchie driving in the runs. Johnson and Lindstedt added RBI singles in the fourth.
