Incumbents win in CLC race

College of Lake County's three incumbents Tuesday got a thumbs-up from voters.

With 400 of 400 precincts reporting, unofficial totals show Amanda Howland, William Griffin and Richard Anderson each earning another six-year term.

Howland led with 13,569, or about 26 percent of the vote. Next was Anderson with 11,630, or 22.3 percent, and then Griffin with 11,334 votes, or 21.8 percent. Newcomer Phillip DeRuntz got 5,053 votes, or 9.7 percent, while Timothy Powell got 10,526 votes, or 20.20 percent, according to unofficial tallies on the Lake County website.

One of the issues in the campaign was a proposal for the school to offer limited bachelor degrees, and there was disagreement on the value of experience in pursuit of that idea. Anderson said he would be more qualified to help in such a pursuit than DeRuntz or Powell.

In February, the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents agreed state lawmakers should let them grant the bachelor's degrees in high-demand career areas, such as nursing, that proponents say could help working people who can't attend or afford traditional four-year university classes. General Assembly approval would be needed for the proposal.

Howland, of Lake Zurich, said the school's mission should continue to be serving students as a community college for two years.
