Morris headed out as Island Lake trustee

Continuing a trend that began two years ago, three Island Lake trustee candidates supported by Mayor Charles Amrich won big Tuesday.

Incumbent John Burke and newcomers Sandy Hartogh and Debra Jenkins earned seats on the six-member panel. They campaigned as a slate.

A fourth candidate, incumbent Thea Morris, is losing her bid for a second term.

With ballots in 9 of 11 precincts counted, unofficial results put Burke in first place with 531 votes. He was appointed to fill a vacancy last year.

Hartogh was in second place with 508 votes, and Jenkins was third with 401 votes. Morris was fourth with 297 votes.

Morris has regularly found herself in the political minority since Amrich and four allies were elected in 2013. She sided with then-Mayor Debbie Herrmann in that election.

Morris said she was disappointed by Tuesday's results. Still, she sounded upbeat.

"I leave my role in May knowing that I have served the people, the office and the village in a fair and diplomatic manner with their best interests in mind," she said in a prepared statement.

The available totals didn't include votes cast in some McHenry County precincts.

All three seats carry 4-year terms.
