Burroway, Sabbe, Humpfer win in Carpentersville
With all 21 precincts reporting, unofficial vote totals show that incumbents Don Burroway and Paul Humpfer plus newcomer Jeffrey Sabbe have won three 4-year term seats on the Carpentersville village board.
Burroway and Humpfer, both completing their first terms, garnered 409 and 366 votes, respectively. Sabbe came in second place with 395 votes. Newcomers Humberto Garcia collected 339 votes, Sara Miller 347 votes, and Christopher Scholl 324 votes.
During the campaign, the candidates had differing priorities for village spending and how to fix the village's image.
Scholl, a village firefighter, said the village needs to hire additional part-time firefighters for better coverage and improved response times. He also supports cutting administrative jobs and using the money to hire firemen.
Humpfer said the village has cut about 30 positions in seven years due to the recession, and may have to consider cutting union jobs next, such as police and firefighters.
Burroway said he doesn't see any problem with how much the village spends on staffing, or its current tax rate, despite residents' complaints. He doesn't think anything should be cut from the budget.
Sabbe said he has no issue with village spending and would not want to cut anything from police and fire department budgets.
Two of the candidates' criminal records came under scrutiny during the campaign - Humpfer's 2008 domestic battery conviction and Garcia admitting to lying about being arrested in 2013 on charges of domestic violence.
