Grass Lake voters oppose $5.6 million loan for new school

Grass Lake District 36 voters rejected a $5.6 million loan proposal that would have been part of an $11.6 million plan to replace the aging Grass Lake School building near Antioch with a modern structure.

With ballots in all three precincts counted, unofficial results showed voters opposed the project 426 to 78.

The remaining $6 million of the $11.6 million plan would have come from district savings. So trustees still will look to make changes to the building, just on a smaller scale, officials said.

Operating since 1947, the facility at 26177 W. Grass Lake Road is the only classroom building for Grass Lake District 36 students. It serves preschoolers through eighth graders.
