Incumbents re-elected to Geneva school board

All three incumbents were re-elected to the Geneva school board Tuesday.

Kelly Nowak had the most votes, with 1,665; Mary Stith was second, with 1,564; and Michael McCormick was third, with 1,495, according to unofficial results.

This will be McCormick's second term, Nowak's third and Stith's fourth. Three 4-year seats were available.

"I feel very humbled," Stith said. "The community spoke - and even though some will say turnout was low - that what the current board is doing is OK."

Only 14.85 percent of registered voters voted.

Taylor Egan came in fourth, Tina Yagla fifth, Ann Murtaugh sixth and Evelyn Schneider seventh.

McCormick said he wanted to continue to be involved in figuring out the finances of the district, especially since its debt repayments are due to escalate substantially in the next four years. "I think the next four years are still going to be particularly rocky," he said. McCormick has voted against increasing the property tax levy.

Stith is the current board's most senior member. She served several years as board president. Stith has become active in statewide school issues through the Illinois Association of School Boards. To those who criticize the property tax bills for the Geneva schools, Stith pointed out that all board members are residents and also have to pay those bills.

Nowak said her first term was about learning the ropes and that she hit her stride during the second term. She has been a member of the Geneva school board's finance committee since it started four years ago. She, too, has become more involved in statewide school politics, including being chairman of the Kishwaukee Division of the IASB.
